Take Up The Bible: Mormonism Compared To Scripture

Take up the Bible, compare the religion of the Latter Day Saints with it, and see if it will stand the test.

Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol 16, p. 46

Brigham Young, in this quote from the Journal of Discourses, shows that he had confidence in LDS doctrine’s consistency with the teachings of the Bible. He suggested that those who may be doubtful of his teachings look to the Bible itself and see if they are true. So… that’s exactly what we’ll do.

The Latter Day Saints:

  • God is an exalted man:

“God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted Man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens.” – Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, pg. 3

  • God is one of many gods:

“I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods.” – Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 6, pg. 474

The Bible:

  • There is only one God:

“…before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” – Isaiah 43:10, KJV

“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.'” – Isaiah 44:6, KJV

  • God is not an exalted man, but the uncreated Creator of mankind:

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” – Numbers 23:19, KJV

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” – Genesis 1:27, KJV

The Latter Day Saints:

  • Jesus was created:

“These attributes are personified and called God: these had no beginning, while His person did have a beginning… the fulness of Truth, existed for endless ages before His person was formed.” – Orson Pratt, The Seer, pg. 131

  • Jesus was conceived by intercourse between God and Mary, not by the Holy Ghost:“The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood—was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers.” – Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, pg. 115

“When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness [flesh and blood]. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost.” – Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, pg. 50

The Bible:

  • Jesus was not created, but is the eternal Creator of all things:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” – John 1:1-3, KJV

  • Jesus was conceived miraculously of the Holy Ghost, not through natural intercourse:“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” – Luke 1:35, KJV

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” – Matthew 1:18, KJV

The Latter Day Saints:

  • Saved by grace only after one has justified himself with works:

“For we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.” – 2 Nephi 25:23

“We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.” – Article of Faith #3

The Bible:

  • Saved by grace alone through faith alone, not by works:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” – Ephesians 2:9-10, KJV

“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” – Galatians 2:16, KJV

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” – Titus 3:5, KJV

“Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” – John 6:28-29, KJV

It is clear that the doctrine of the Latter Day Saints does not stand when tested against the measure of scripture. It teaches a different God, a different Christ, and an altogether different gospel.

Scripture says, “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God… all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10-12, 23). Isaiah says, “All of our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6).

Therefore, there are no works that can get us any closer to the Father. Rather, as Christ said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent” (John 6:28-29). When Christ died on the cross, He took our sins upon Himself (1 Peter 2:24), and when we believe in Christ, His righteousness is given to us (Romans 3-5). It is Christ’s works, and not our own, that justify those who have faith in His life, death, and resurrection. This is the true gospel.

The Scriptures warn us against false gospels, saying that belief in an untrue gospel cannot save (Galatians 1:6-9). Seeing that LDS doctrines do not line up with Scripture, this means that the Mormon gospel cannot save. Therefore, if you are part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I plead with you to put your trust in the true biblical gospel and be saved. If you would like to discuss this further, I would absolutely love to talk with you at bereanworldview1711@gmail.com

If you are a Christian who believes the true biblical gospel, I exhort you to help me plead with those in the LDS church to turn to the true Christ. This is not simply a different denomination, but a false church whose doctrines have no power to save. If you know anyone who is part of this church, their eternity is on the line. Where they spend eternity may depend on your willingness to have this tough conversation.
